HMAS Vampire D-11, Daring Class Destroyer

This page is respectfully dedicated to the Officers and Men that served in HMAS Vampire, and her sister Daring Class Destroyers

This page features a Walkabout tour of HMAS Vampire..."The Bat" OR "Fang", as she is affectionately known. It is intended to be a photo reference for those building the outstanding Ozmods 1/350, or 1/700 kits of this venerable ship, or her sisters Voyager and Vendetta. Nine ships of this class were completed for the Royal Navy as well.

Her Majesties Australian Ship Vampire, berthed in her home at The Australian National Maritime Mueum, Darling Harbour, Sydney, NSW.
A bow shot, last of the "Big Guns", she carries 3x twin 4.5 in /45 (114 mm) Mark V turrets.

A close up of the rakish bow, showing anchor detail. The ship was capable of a sustained 30 knot speed, and a range of 4400 Nautical miles.

"B" turret. Vampire was manned by a complement of 297 Officers and Men.
She certainly looks intimidating! 389.3 feet/ 120 metres long, beam 43 feet/ 13.11 metres.
Another view of the formidible forward battery.The main guns were supplemented by 2 twin 40mm bofors Anti aircraft guns in 2 guntubs port and starbourd abaft the after funnel, and two singles abaft the forward superstructure.

Main stack. The ships motto is "Audamus". The Ships Badge is a Vampire Bat.

Aft superstructure, note the Red Roo, the symbol worn by all Australian Warships, very fitting indeed. Although, when in commission, Vampire wore a Bat on her funnel.
